Last week members discussed legal project management solutions and more. Jump to the “Something Extra” section for resources on lateral hiring. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.

LPM is Your Friend

In October of 2016, Tom Snavely and Peter Lane Secor discussed the distinctions of project management in the legal industry, “PM and LPM – Are They Really that Different?” They discussed differences in the project manager role in different firms. Tom said, “LPM is using project management tools in the legal environment.” Peter said LPM is scalable and he calls it “Extreme PM.” This includes people defining the project and on-demand and adaptive responses with a communication plan. To learn more about developing an LPM program for your organization, listen to the ILTA Radio session “A Discussion on Advancing Legal Project Management.” For the legal operations readers wanting to implement LPM, David Rueff and Scott Rosenberg wrote an ILTA white paper article, “Enhancing Legal Operations by Integrating LPM Techniques with Matter Management, E-Billing and Financial Analytics.” Have you noticed the “Lifecycle of a Matter” ILTA blog series? Read the post on LPM and Pricing by Madison Vermette. She describes “how pricing and LPM professionals at my firm interact with legal teams and clients.”

SOMETHING EXTRA – Lateral Hiring

Recently, Altman Weil published its 2017 Law Firms in Transition Survey identifying law firm growth trends, lawyer staffing and much more. Will this create lateral movement? InOutsource’s Max Welsh wrote the “Lateral Hire Steeplechase: A Course Map” to address risk management considerations with laterals.  With laterals moving in and out of organizations, ILTA members have much to consider from training to information governance and security. Learn about recent “Trends in Training” in this ILTA Radio segment. Though we want to protect any information from leaving the organization, we want to be knowledgeable about the information coming into the organization. The ILTA Video “Enable a Knowledge Sharing Culture” will help you consider ways to enable social collaboration and identifying expertise.

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics. If there are specific topics you would like assistance exploring, please contact me at joanne@iltanet.org
