This past week I, like many of you, have spent a lot of time discussing and reading about BIG DATA. Each of us may define that term a little different than another or maybe it causes varied thoughts and emotions when the topic is brought up. I like to simplify it and just call it content. Less bling in the term, and typically brings out the security part in me. Discussing BIG DATA and content cause me to feel overwhelmed. I think of policy, handling procedures, complicated access due to new technologies, audits, users jumping the fence to do their own thing, workspaces, and I could go on forever. I have found that the LegalSEC package is quickly becoming another delivery check box that needs to be considered in every deployment.
Just like the other groups in ILTA, some of us are further along than others. As a member of the policy group in the initial LegalSEC committee, I was (individually) overwhelmed preparing for the effects of HIPAA and other compliance requirements bearing down on legal, but then as we worked together and conducted our conference calls, the waters seem to calm. Still deep, still vast, still capable of tumultuous weather - the environment didn't change - but alike many of the initiatives I have found over the years, ILTA became a calming resource.
As ILTA evolves and casts a wider LegalSEC net for all of us, no matter what responsibilities you have security affects you. Please take the time to monitor this group, get involved and understand what is going on. Just like many other parts of ILTA this also becomes a familiar tool to pull out the box. No matter how you contribute or receive value from ILTA, you should include LegalSEC.
