Navigating Roundabouts vs. Legal Tech: A Fun Spin Around the Circle

You might be wondering, "why roundabouts?"

Because I used to hate them. Truly. The hesitation, the second-guessing, the person who just stops in the middle for no apparent reason… it drove me crazy.

And now? I actually enjoy them.  Once you get used to them, they are not stressful at all. They are efficient. Predictable. Even a little satisfying.  And that is when it hit me… this is exactly like legal technology.

Let me enlighten you…

Roundabouts either make you feel like a traffic pro or leave you orbiting like a lost satellite. Legal tech has the same effect. When it works, it works beautifully. When it does not, it feels unnecessarily complicated. But the truth is, both are systems, and once you understand how to move through them, everything gets easier and more enjoyable.

Entering the Circle: Timing is Everything

Roundabouts: You approach cautiously, read the flow, yield to oncoming traffic, wait for the right gap, and merge seamlessly. Timing is everything. Hesitate too long and you annoy everyone behind you.  Jump in too soon and, well, chaos ensues.

Legal Tech: Starting with a new platform or AI tool is similar. You need to assess whether your workflow is ready for the upgrade. If you adopt something too early without understanding how it fits, you create confusion. Wait too long, and suddenly everyone else has moved ahead without you.

Stay in Your Lane

Roundabouts: The golden rule is choosing the right lane for your destination.  If you pick the wrong lane, you will figure it out quickly and not in a good way. Drifting between lanes? That is how accidents happen.

Legal Tech: Similarly, stick to the right tools for your purpose. Not every tool is meant for every job.  Need contract analysis? Use an AI-driven solution, not a glorified spreadsheet.  Straying into unnecessary tools or workflows only creates bottlenecks and inefficiencies.

Signal Your Intentions

Roundabouts: That little blinker can work wonders.  Let other drivers know when you are exiting.  Clear communication reduces the chance of mistakes and makes everything smoother for everyone.

Legal Tech: Communication is key here, too. If teams are not aligned on workflows or expectations, things start to break down. Sharing your intentions ensures everyone is on the same page and avoids costly mistakes.

Avoid the Endless Loop

Roundabouts:  You meant to get out, you missed it, and now you are stuck going around again, wondering how you ended up here. We have all done it. It is funny the first time. Not so much the fifth.

Legal Tech: Sticking with outdated tools when better ones exist feels the same. You are just running in circles, holding onto workflows that no longer make sense. Adopting smarter platforms can break the loop, letting you exit old workflows and move forward with intention.

Efficiency: Roundabouts vs. Traffic Lights

Roundabouts: At first, they feel slower than traffic lights. But once you get used to them, you realize they keep everything moving.  They are actually faster and more efficient than traditional traffic lights.

Legal Tech: Investing in automation or AI tools may feel daunting initially, but once it is embedded properly, things flow. It is all about embracing the flow. Less stopping. Less waiting. More consistency.

Dealing with Disruptions

Roundabouts: Someone hesitates. Someone cuts in. Someone stops in the middle. The flow breaks for a moment. Suddenly, the whole system is a mess.  But with patience and quick thinking, it usually recovers quickly.

Legal Tech: Systems glitch. People misunderstand processes. It happens. The key is staying calm and applying the right fixes.  When you adjust, things keep moving.

Drive Smart, Work Smart

Eventually, you stop thinking about the roundabout. You just drive. That is where you want to get with technology. When it stops feeling like “a system you have to use” and starts feeling like part of how you work.

At the end of the day, both roundabouts and legal tech come down to the same thing: understanding the system, trusting the process, and knowing when to move. Once you get that right, everything else tends to fall into place. And if nothing else, at least you are no longer stuck going in circles.

Just don't forget to signal 😉
