Generative AI is transforming the legal industry right before our eyes. With the launch of enterprise-grade GPT and large language models (LLM) -- such as OpenAI’s GPT-4, Meta’s Llama, and Google’s LaMDA -- there has been instant attention on how this latest evolution of AI can be leveraged to solve complex legal data challenges.

These models can be particularly beneficial in e-discovery use cases due to the volume and complexity of data involved in most matters, and counsel are becoming increasingly receptive to their use. In The General Counsel Report 2024, for example, 80% of general counsel reported feeling comfortable using AI for e-discovery use cases and more than 75% plan to make new technology investments this year.

This positive reception is more than just buzz, however; the validity of these models is becoming increasingly evident as they prove their worth in real-world applications.

From Planning to Practice

At the beginning of 2024, Relativity launched a suite of fit-for-purpose generative AI products, Relativity aiR, built to empower legal teams to transform their approach to legal data challenges from the security of Microsoft Azure’s OpenAI services. The first product to launch from this suite, Relativity aiR for Review, is actively helping teams conduct first-pass review, prioritize important documents, analyze coding decisions from traditional review, uncover materials for investigations, and, ultimately, take on higher value tasks.

Here are some of the results legal teams have seen by incorporating generative AI into their review workflows:

• In an experiment conducted by Relativity and Redgrave Data  , a generative AI prototype for first-pass review achieved an estimated 96% recall and 60% precision without matter-specific tuning.
• A Sidley experiment of GPT-4’s performance in document review found that when GPT-4 is confident, it can code seven out of ten documents correctly, identifying most of the responsive documents and non-responsive documents. When GPT-4 is not as confident, it can tag 64.5% of documents correctly as responsive.
• In testing Relativity aiR for Review’s generative AI capabilities, one of the biggest telecom companies     in the world found that aiR for Review outperformed the review performance of their top reviewer in less time than traditional review.

Evolving the Business of Legal

With generative AI solutions on the path to wide adoption, soon the industry is going to look wildly different than it does today. So, what can we expect ahead?

For starters, we’re already seeing improved workflows that can free up talented professionals for more strategic work. Instead of focusing on initial classification of documents, teams can focus on valuable priorities such as building more effective case strategies or enforcing clearer defensible disposition practices that reduce spoliation risks.

In the long run, generative AI is going to become a pervasive and necessary tool. One that will allow legal to rebrand itself from The Department of No to The Team of Yes, And…

In that spirit, the first step toward this new way of working is simple: say yes. The industry is at inflection point; it’s time to take the plunge and discover the vast potential that generative AI has to offer.
