Windows Phone: Is it Ready For Legal?

Windows Phone 7 was first released back in Q4 of 2010.  Windows Phone replaced Microsoft’s Windows Mobile but was generally incompatible with the old products.  When it was first released, Microsoft stated that it was squarely aimed at the consumer market.

According to Gartner, at the end of 2013, Windows Phone market share was around 3% in the US.  Worldwide, Windows Phone market share has reach the double digits in some markets.  As a general trend, Windows Phone has been increasing in market share world-wide.

Though aimed at consumers, prior versions of Windows Phone had a lot of business user functionality, but there were a number of limitations for IT shops looking to manage these devices.  That changed some with the release of Windows 8.1.  Version 8.1 was released back in the beginning of April 2014.  Windows 8.1 has many more management and security APIs than the pervious version.

One advantage Windows Phone has is tight integration with other Microsoft technologies such as AD, Exchange, SharePoint and Lync.  It is also supported on most of the major mobile device management platforms (AirWatch, Good, MaaS360 & Mobile Iron).

One of the biggest complaints from online bloggers and even some Windows Phone manufactures is a lack of apps written for it.

On the whole, the Windows Phone is a workable solution when it comes to meeting the needs of the IT shop and it should meet the basic needs of the end user.  However, in a BYOD environment, end users may find the limited selection of apps a draw back.
