Influential Women in Legal Technology: Honoree #2, Dorna Moini

Since 2020, ILTA has annually honored five outstanding women leaders in the global legal technology community. Each March, during International Women's History Month, honorees are selected based on their history of mentorship and level of impact on Legal Technology.

This year, ILTA is pleased to share the list of the 2022 recipients:
-Ebru Metin, Founder and CEO, Legal Design Turkey
-Dorna Moini, Founder and CEO, Documate
-Leah Molatseli, Head of Business Development, Legal Interact
-Joy Heath Rush, CEO, ILTA
-Naomi Thompson, Senior Vice President, Legal Solutions EMEA, Exigent Group Limited

Today, we are pleased to highlight our next 2022 Influential Woman: Dorna Moini.

Dorna Moini is the CEO and founder of Documate, a no-code platform for building document automation and client-facing legal products. Prior to starting Documate, Dorna was a litigator at Sidley Austin. There, in her pro bono practice, she worked with legal aid organizations to build a web application for domestic violence survivors to complete and file their paperwork, which led to the idea for Documate.

Dorna is on the LSC Emerging Leaders Council and a member of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles's Advisory Board. She has been named an ABA Legal Rebel and a Fastcase 50 honoree. She also teaches the Legal Innovations Lab at USC Law School.

Earlier this year, we sat down with Dorna and asked her to dive a little deeper with ILTA. Here are some insights into the second of our five 2022 Influential Women in Technology:

Describe your role as if you are speaking with a child.

I'm the CEO of Documate, a software platform that empowers lawyers to automate their work by building online legal tools. These lawyers don't need any coding knowledge. Rather, Documate gives them the Lego pieces to build anything they want.

What accomplishment in the legal space are you most proud of?

Like a proud mother launching her kids into the world, I am most proud of the attorneys who have built legal tech businesses and non-profit tools on Documate. These lawyers are bringing legal services to the masses, and include non-profits around the world, legal tech companies like Hello Divorce, Landlord Legal and JusTech, and courts like the Louisiana Supreme Court.

How do you make sure there are seats at the table for women in the industry?

Leading by example, providing support and introductions, and recognizing implicit bias. My door and calendar are always open to smart, ambitious women who are forging their own paths in legal tech.

What is one challenge within legal technology you hope to help solve?

Documate democratizes the development of legal technology tools. In the next 10 years, we estimate that we can take 90% of legal services online. This includes the latent legal market of consumers who currently can't access the legal system and will be served by rules-based legal apps built on Documate.

If you could spend one hour with someone who you feel has had a significant impact on your success (directly or indirectly), who would you spend it with and what’s the one question you’d ask them?

I would spend it with the two female partners I worked with and admire from my time working in Big Law, Jennifer Redmond and Wendy Lazerson. And I would ask them to tell me about a failure in their career. It's easy to look only to the wins, but it's the losses that build our character and form the foundation for our careers.
