Do you ever wonder why misspelled words don't always show up on a spell check? One reason could be that the word was inadvertently added to your custom dictionary, but most likely the misspelled word was ignored in a previous spell check.
Using Spell Check's Ignore feature marks the word as spelled correctly in this document forever which means it will not be displayed on subsequent spell checks.
Since we're often on auto pilot when performing a spell check, it is very easy to accidentally hit the Ignore button and unknowingly leave misspelled words in the document. Fortunately, Word's Recheck feature resets the spell checker to pick up words that have previously been ignored.
- Click the File tab > select Options > select Proofing.
- Under When correcting spelling and grammar in Word, select Recheck Document.
- When prompted to continue, click Yes.
- Click OK to close the Word Options dialog box.
At this point, the word is once again marked as misspelled.
Note of Caution: If Recheck is launched from the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT), it will only reset words where the Ignore option was selected - not Ignore All. Therefore, the Reset button is probably not a good candidate for the QAT. Always use the Options menu to ensure that all words ignored both individually, as well as using the Ignore All option, are reset.
