By ILTACON Europe Conference posted 10-04-2013 10:57

Greetings! This is Issue 2 of INSIGHT Matters, our newsletter to keep you updated on the planning process for INSIGHT 2013, at Grange St Paul’s in London on November 14th. If you missed the prior blog, view it here

A message from co-chair Gareth Ash, CIO at Allen & Overy LLP
I am a big fan of ILTA and I think the most recent conference in Las Vegas has cemented the reputation of ILTA as a premier peer network maximizing the value of technology in the legal profession.

But we know that not everyone was able to join us there, which is why I'm so delighted that ILTA will be back in the UK in November with its 8th INSIGHT event. The conference spans one day and is designed to further explore some of the key themes discussed in Las Vegas, as well as drilling-down into technology issues more commonly faced by organisations with a significant European footprint.

This year’s highlight promises to be the keynote presentation from Futurist Rohit Talwar of Fast Future Research. Rohit will be giving INSIGHT a world exclusive on his research findings into the future of technology in the legal industry - the most significant research ever undertaken in this area.

Please do take a look at the INSIGHT website for further information on the agenda and line-up of speakers, and consider whether you, or any of your peers/colleagues may benefit from participating and sharing knowledge.

It promises to be a great day and I look forward to seeing you there.

Session line up finalised
A huge amount of effort goes into crafting the educational programme for every ILTA event and INSIGHT is no different. We’ve just put the finishing touches to a rich schedule of peer-developed content that will aim to stimulate, inform and entertain, with contributions from some of the most respected, influential names in legal. You can check out the complete running order on our website but here’s just a taste of what you can expect across the Technical, Knowledge Management and Litigation Support tracks:

Future Technologies Workshop: Practical Strategies for Aligning IT with the Business to Build Tomorrow’s Law Firm
Technical Session: Rise of the Machines: AI in a Legal World
KM Session: Dinosaur or Furry Mammal? Changing Behaviors To Succeed in an Uncertain World
Litigation Support Session: Is Legal Anti-Social?

A message from Legal Technology Future Horizons project director Rohit Talwar:
ILTA's Legal Technology Future Horizons project has been a ground-breaking, forward-looking and hard-hitting study looking at how the industry could be disrupted and transformed by an accelerating pace of technological change. The findings are now in and I’m delighted that we’ll have the ILTA INSIGHT event as our platform for the first presentation of the critical ideas and implications arising from the research. Delegates will hear about the external business forces, legal sector specific trends and emerging technology developments that are expected to have the biggest impact on how law firms operate.

Through both my keynote and the subsequent workshop, I’ll be highlighting the industry response to the most disruptive scenarios and innovation ideas considered through the research. I will identify emerging strategic challenges and define key priorities around the use of IT in tomorrow's law firm. Looking forward, I’ll also be setting out a series of key strategic imperatives around how law firms evolve IT from back office function to a role at the centre of competitive differentiation, value creation and client relationship management in tomorrow's legal enterprise.

If you are looking for just one reason to head to London this year, then I can assure you this is it – and I look forward to welcoming you.

On track with content
ILTA is unique in its event management as it puts peer-developed content at the heart of every programme. Here three of our track leads offer their own personal messages about this year’s sessions:

Neal Rayner, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP (Legal and Technology Futures):
Technology continues to advance at an astounding pace, allowing ever greater power and intelligence. When and how will it have the capability to offer some of the knowledge and abilities of a lawyer? And how will it challenge or enable our lawyers and firms? At this session, you will hear from those who are driving machine intelligence and have an up-to-date view of capability. There will be reflection and debate from legal technologists on the impact on lawyers, law firms, and those responsible for providing their technology.

Penny Newman, Lewis Silkin LLP (Knowledge Management):
Are your lawyers doomed to extinction? As the pace of change increases, how many firms are prepared to tackle the KM and change management issues facing their businesses? Hear a powerful case study on change in the music industry from Cliff Fluet and follow that up with a workshop where you can tackle your own change issues with your peers.

Vince Neicho, Allen & Overy LLP (Litigation Support):
I am very much looking forward to joining my fellow speakers to introduce some new topics and to approach some existing key topics from new angles. With a healthy mix of the practical and the legal, sessions are high in essential educational content and designed to appeal to lawyers and litigation support professionals alike. Delegate participation is of course encouraged at all sessions, none more so than the "Here and Now and The Future" sessions where we will build on what I am confident will be a thought-provoking keynote speech and touch on some current trends and how they might play out.

Join the conversation
There are two ways you can join in the conversation for this year’s INSIGHT. There’s the Subject Matters blog, where we are happy to host any articles, comment, white papers or similar relevant to the topics within this year’s program. You don’t have to be attending, you can be an individual or a supplier, just as long as content remains king. Please email jeanne@iltanet.org with your contributions.

Sponsoring ILTA Insight
We’ve been delighted by the response of potential sponsors to our Suppliers Prospectus and we’re looking to close out all the opportunities available in the next four weeks. After that, there will be no more! Being an integral part of INSIGHT, being a welcome participant in both the educational and networking aspects of the day, is how we view supplier involvement – we don’t want you on the periphery, we want you joining in and making your own contribution. And we want you to feel that it’s money well spent. We’re forecasting over 200 delegates from the top 200 international law firms there – please come and join us.
