INSIGHT Matters - Issue 3

By ILTACON Europe Conference posted 11-01-2013 13:01

Greetings! This is Issue 3 of INSIGHT Matters, our newsletter to keep you updated on the planning process for INSIGHT 2013, at The Grange St Paul’s in London on November 14th.

On course for the most successful ILTA INSIGHT ever

As the final issue of INSIGHT Matters for this year went to press, pre-registrations were already over the 220 mark – and that’s still with two weeks to go! And there’s a buzz and a vibe we’re hearing about this year that’s really encouraging – we’ve worked hard to make the US ILTA event one of the ‘must attends’ in people’s diaries and we so want to elevate our London gathering to a similar status. That’s why it’s so good to see plenty of new names signing up too – a fresh audience who will get to experience first-hand the ILTA difference. Remember, we’re not a trade show and we have no desire to compete in that space – what we’re offering is an educational conference, with, of course, some excellent networking and social opportunities to boot. If you’ve never been to ILTA INSIGHT, then trust us, there’s never been a better year to give it a try. It’s free, you don’t have to be an ILTA member to participate, and we promise you a compelling programme of keynotes, workshops and seminars, led by our ground-breaking Legal Technology Future Horizons research project.

The main event

From comment and feedback we’ve been receiving since we first announced ILTA INSIGHT 2013, there’s no doubt that this year’s BIG draw is futurist Rohit Talwar and the Legal Technology Horizons Project. And rightly so because this is probably the most significant research study into the subject ever undertaken – and INSIGHT delegates get to hear its key findings first. Just to tee things up further, we asked Rohit to put together a post for the event blog, to explain the context for the study, its potential impact going forward and the take-out for delegates from the results and the thinking they’ve inspired.

Sweet fifteen

You may have registered but have you made your session picks yet? There are fifteen to choose from across the technology, litigation support and knowledge management tracks. And while you’re free to go as you please on the day it is still worth taking a good look at the complete conference programme to ensure you make the best of your time with us. Each session has full speaker details and synopsis now available so a quick check will help you decide whether you’re in a furry mammal, document collaborator or anti-social sort of mood!

Mr Dale’s Diary
Chris Dale, of the e-Disclosure Information Project, offers up a personal view of ILTA INSIGHT

I am an unabashed enthusiast for the International Legal Technology Association, ILTA, whose big US conference every year is one of the high points of my (over-full) conference calendar.

It has three key elements which are critical to lawyers everywhere – the high quality of its sessions, the peer-to-peer principles of shared understanding and knowledge which are fundamental to its foundation, and the opportunity to supplement the formal exchange of shared knowledge with informal networking.

All that comes to London (shorn of some of the side-attractions which Las Vegas offers) on 14 November with a one-day event, ILTA INSIGHT 2013, at the Grange St Paul’s Hotel which offers a packed programme and the other things mentioned above in exchange for a registration fee of – zero.
The Agenda is here. The discovery-related sessions include one called the Ins and Outs of information governance, one called Budgeting and eDisclosure, and my own one called Non-traditional sources of electronic evidence.
Other subjects include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and mobile working, document collaboration, the ever-developing subject of BYOD (Bring your own device) and the use of social business tools in legal practice.
In addition, there is a keynote by futurist Rohit Talwar in which he shares the findings from ILTA’s Legal Technology Future Horizons Project, a discussion about how businesses have adapted to change where others have not, and discussions about the route to the future from now.

My own primary aim in going, apart from the sessions in which I am participating, is the opportunity to talk and listen to the people who have the problems and those with the experiences of solving them.

I hope to see you there.

A different sort of event altogether

One of the things that surprises new sponsors to ILTA INSIGHT – and we have many this year, thank you – is that they come as participants, not promoters. We don’t ask for sponsorships of the tops of chocolate-sprinkled cappuccinos or the backs of the loo doors because commercialism is not what ILTA is about. We’re about content, conversations and connecting people and we believe that individuals from both law firms and vendors should be able to come together and make their respective contributions without feeling any pressure to ‘sell’ or ‘buy’. So there are no stands, no booths, no paid for speaker slots or plugs masquerading as presentations in a corner. It’s very different from a conventional trade show in that respect but that’s simply because it’s not our bag – ‘sponsorship’ for us is a way in for vendors to join in. And like everything in life, the more you put in, the more you get out. So we do hope that this year’s supporters, new and old, will take the unique opportunity that ILTA events offer and participate fully in the spirit of the occasion.

P.S. We still have a limited number of opportunities available and there’s still time to get INSIGHT into your life in 2013! You can view the Supplier Prospectus now - http://www.iltanet.org/Downloads/INSIGHT-2013-Prospectus.pdf.

Two weeks and 2014

Yes, there really is only a fortnight to go to the big day but the truth is, we’re already looking ahead to 2014. And while we have our thoughts and ideas, we want to hear back from as many people as possible on how we can do things even better next time. If you have chosen not to attend this year, is there anything we could have done that would have altered that decision? If you do attend, tell us what you thought – of the programme, the venue, the organisation, the timing, what we did right, what we got wrong, indeed anything that we can feedback into the continual improvement process that ILTA is committed to as regards event development.

Your views matter so if you can spare us a minute to share them with us, we’d be very grateful. You can email Peggy Wechsler at any time.
