This week in the e-groups, discussions included security policies for working on home computers, website content management and governance and more. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.
More Security Policies
With security concerns from HIPAA regulations and PHI to an aim to surpass client security expectations, ILTA members must constantly re-visit their security strategy while allowing for employee conveniences like mobility. Several ILTACON 2015 sessions focused on various aspects of security strategy development. See “The Client’s Perspective on Maintaining Data Security and Confidentiality” to understand client needs and expectations. To assist with the recent question on using home computers for work materials, review “Remote Access: What’s New with this Old Problem?” If you have considered Surface tablets as a strategy to manage security with remote access, you can learn about some peers’ deployments in “Deploying and Supporting Microsoft Surface Devices.” Hot off the press, find security best practices as related to mobility in the latest Peer to Peer issue.
Website Content Management First Needs Governance
What makes an article written by an attorney out-of-date? Who decides what links stay on a firm website or attorney bio within the website and who decides what goes? I read an article several years ago by Seth Earley likening website content management to moving into a new home. I like this analogy. Once you unpack all the boxes, the place looks great. Then you live there a while, accumulating more. When building a website the same can occur. A plan is conceived with everything in its place but over time accumulation and disorder can set in and you see redundant, obsolete and trivial content (a.k.a. ROT). The blog posting, “Content Governance (and Why Your Website Can’t Live Without It)” will help you understand the need for governance and take the initial steps in this project. To help with the initial question about attorney biography content, see pages 11-15 of a PowerPoint from the Association of Legal Administrators 2015 conference, “Your Website: Make It a Strategic and Business Development Asset.” For some analysis and inspiration consider reviewing some of the best law firm websites of 2015 according to the Lawyerist and ONE400.

Whether you lead in your work, in your volunteering or want to become a leader, the Sharon Swartworth Leadership Development Seminar in Washington, D.C. on November 2, 2015 has something for you. You can still register for this free seminar with sessions on leading, mentoring, developing flexibility and training the future leaders of the legal technology profession.
If you live in the United Kingdom or Continental Europe, consider registering for another free ILTA event, INSIGHT. INSIGHT takes place 12 November 2015 in London with session tracks in Business and Finance, Litigation Support and Knowledge Management, Innovation and AI, Cybersecurity and a Supplier Technology Showcase. INISGHT added a session on the Safe Harbor issues stirred up by the recent Schrems decision. Don’t miss this timely and important discussion.
Many ILTA members discussed the Peter Diamandis’ Tech Blog on technology predictions made by Ray Kurzweil. Consider reviewing ILTA’s Legal Technology Future Horizon’s report for an assessment of current and future technologies’ impact on legal. For a quicker read focus on the sections, “The Emerging Technology Timeline” on page 62 and “Future Strategic Applications and Challenges” on page 94.
If you are a fan of the Tip of the Week offered by Maritta Terrell and want to share some of these with your offices, consider browsing through the ILTA Tips on the Connected Community. ILTA Tips are collected in blogs postings. To search for particular ILTA Tips content, enter a search term and limit the search to blogs.
