Members recently discussed billing policies, sharing European data post-Schrems ruling, capturing and using metrics and more. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.

Billing Policies – Motivating Timeliness and Improving Accuracy

With billing, timing is everything. The billing department need clients to pay in a timely manner and billers need to submit their time and other charges with expedience. ILTA knows your billing struggles and has several tools to help. The webinar, “Time Entry and Real-Time Compliance Improve Billing Accuracy,” and the ILTA white paper, “Is Your Firm Failing at Collections?,” can improve relations with the client and receive payments faster. Find guidance to motivate your billing attorneys and staff in the two-part ILTACON 2015 series, “Reboot Your Billing Process: Parts I and II.”

Schrems- Protection of Data in the European Union

The Schrems ruling from October 2015 invalidating “safe harbor” guidelines has attorneys, litigation support specialists, information governance leaders and many others on edge. What are the new best practices and guidelines for firms and for clients? The most recent Peer to Peer published excerpts from an interview at ILTA’s INSIGHT 2015 with Gayle McFarlane and Jason Rix. McFarlane and Rix explore the impact of the ruling and some steps to take to mitigate risk in “The Schrem’s Decision’s Impact on the Legal Profession.” Chris Dale of the eDisclosure Information Project has shared his ideas and Judge Peck’s on proceeding given the Schrems ruling in “Interview: U.S. Magistrate Judge Peck on Cross-border discovery After Schrems.”  Also consider reviewing the sound advice in “What Everyone Should Know About Bringing European Data to the U.S.” from kCura’s Relativity blog.

Capturing Metrics for Litigation and Beyond

Both clients and law firms seek efficiency. Metrics help prove and maintain efficiency. Following the ILTACON 2015 session, “Shared Practice Metrics for Law Firms and Legal Departments”, ILTA volunteers called upon each panel member for a podcast to further explore using metrics successfully. Gain guidance and support for using metrics from the three podcast interviews with Connie Brenton of NetApp, Inc., David Cunningham of Winston & Strawn, and Jeffrey Schwarz of Polsinelli. Also consider more hands-on steps from the ILTA webinars, “Practice Economics 101 for Litigation/Practice Support Professionals” and “Set the Foundation for Legal Process Management – A Road Map III.” Here are links to Road Map I and Road Map II. Want more? As I type, ILTA volunteer members in the Business Management Content Team are developing a new series focused on the RFP process. Watch for this in the near future.

SOMETHING EXTRA – Moving to Exchange Online, Great Content from Members, and another Standing Desk

ILTA has many members on the front lines of upgrading to Windows 10, Office 365, Exchange 2016, etc. Others need to upgrade soon but have taken the “wait and see” stance. When considering your next steps for upgrades, see Joseph Hoegler’s blog posts “Exchange 2016: Compelling Reasons to Upgrade” and “Exchange 2016: Considerations for a Successful Upgrade” and Beau Mersereau’s recommended reading from ZDNet, “Microsoft Expands Get Windows 10 Program to Domains, Publishes Opt-Out Instructions.”

ILTA volunteers continue to produce more amazing content in 2016 including Part Three of Deborah Thompson’s “How to Develop a Training Program.”

If “sit less” topped your 2016 resolutions but you balked at the price tag, consider this product collapsible standing desk for $25 plus shipping from Oristand. Thanks to the Rick Georges of FutureLawyer for highlighting this earlier in the week.

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics. If there are specific topics you would like assistance exploring, please contact me at joanne@iltanet.org
