This past week members discussed password management tools, telecom systems and more. I also have highlights and links to the recordings from the SharePoint||Office 365 Symposium and the LegalSEC Summit. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.
Passwords
A good password management tool can make work easier and make your work product more secure. Members recently sought and received recommendations on password management tools. Password management arose in the ILTA’s 2015 Technology Survey as one of three greatest security challenges for seven percent of respondents. The 2015 LegalSEC Summit session, “Membership Has Its Privileges: Password and Privilege Access Management,” shares the benefits of password management tools but also the best practices regarding access privilege “to put a smile on your auditor’s face.”
Picking Up the Phone
We have all done it. We hit send and the recipient of our email misconstrues our tone or guesses all too correctly the tone we implied. Or a simple request turns into an email string with 15 or more back and forth messages. Toastmasters states “the most effective speaking rate is between 120 to 160 words per minute.” The average person can only type about 40 words per minute. With an appreciation for the need and demand by attorneys for a phone system, members recently asked for new telephone system recommendations. To go with their recommendations, ILTA has an upcoming webinar on “Telecom Life Cycle Management 301: Modernize Telecom Management for Better Visibility, Decision Making and Savings.” This virtual event follows two earlier telecom management sessions, “Telecom Management: Good, Better, Best” and “Telecom Life Cycle Management 201: IT and AP Work Together.”
Highlights from the SharePoint || Office 365 Symposium
Keynote speaker and Office 365 MVP, Richard Harbridge, opened the SharePoint || Office 365 Symposium with a keynote on “Leading Your Firm to Success with SharePoint and Office 365” and explained “when to use what.” He shared a white paper of the same name, “When to Use What.” When speaking about an organization’s intranet Harbridge said, “implement the intranet in a way that doesn't just empower leaders with analytics and insights but empowers everyone.” To learn more about Symposium happenings, Ted of Acrowire wrote two pieces, “Office 365 Piggybacks on ILTA’s SharePoint Symposium” and “You Need SharePoint 2016. Here’s Why.” Ted provides over 70 reasons! Harbridge closed the Symposium with another presentation telling the story of “SharePoint & Office 365 By the Numbers.” If you missed a session or missed this Symposium, you can now access the recordings and presentation materials from the sessions at this year’s SharePoint || Office 365 Symposium.
Highlights from the LegalSEC Summit
Though terrified by what speakers uncovered in the Dark Net session at ILTA’s LegalSEC Summit last week, attendees also learned about security awareness best practices, new tools like Bro’s Network Security Monitor, how and where breaches often occur, security metrics and more. Keynote speaker, entrepreneur and first U.S Cybersecurity Chief, Rod Beckstrom, shared that the largest concentration of intellectual property resides on law firm servers and said “no one is safe until everyone is safe.” He urged attendees to consider security as not just one topic but many. If broken into manageable parts, starting the process toward better security becomes possible. Sherri Vollick shared her experience as a co-share and said, “The 2016 LegalSEC Summit was not only my first year as co-chair, but my first involvement in planning a summit. In the past I've been asked to sit on a panel, or moderate a discussion, but WOW to be asked to be co-chair! What an honor to be in such good company! I had no idea that the planning committee started back in October to put on a summit the following June. Eight months of planning, discussing, refining, gathering and genuine hard work went into each and every session. I'd like to say thank you to all of the planning committee members for their efforts. A shout out to Missy and TJ - you two are awesome! A thank you to my co-chair Scott for being patient with the newbie. But most of all a huge thank you to the ILTA Members for attending and making the summit such a success. I look forward to serving as your co-chair next year.” For more highlights on the LegalSEC Summit read Scott Rolf’s, LegalSEC Summit co-chair, blog, “Thoughts on the 2016 LegalSEC Summit.” If you missed a session or missed this Summit, ILTA members can now access the recordings and presentation materials from the sessions at this year’s LegalSEC 101 Pre-Summit Workshop and the two day LegalSEC Summit.
