Last week members discussed hiring decisions, knowledge management and more. This week’s ILTACON TV highlight features KM leaders Oz Benamram and Meredith Williams. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.
Hiring Conundrums – Internal vs. External Hiring
A member recently asked if others announce positions internally before publicly posting. The member also asked if firms use their intranet to post open positions. Both hiring internally or from outside the organization present benefits and challenges as highlighted by the Society for Human Resource Management’s “Weighing Internal vs. External Hires.” Other articles on this topic include “Advantages and Disadvantages of External Recruiting,” “Top Five Benefits of Recruiting Internally” and “Hiring? Why Internal Candidates Might Be Your Best Bet.” While you consider hiring strategies, review ILTA’s 2015 IT Staffing Survey.
The Value of Knowledge Management
The value of knowledge management is inherent in its name, the management of knowledge. KM aims higher than information sharing. It connects people, departments and organizations to the right information at the right time and in the right quantities but how do we measure “right?” Besides recent ILTACON sessions on client and matter profiling and beginning data analytics for law firms, ILTA has many other resources on promoting and measuring knowledge management including “Get Your Message Out: Promoting KM in Your Organization,” “Starting as a KM Leader at a New Firm” and “All About Data.” KM leader, Ginevra Saylor, shared twelve short video interviews on knowledge management. You will also want to review Ginevra’s article “Transforming Tacit Knowledge: Making the Most of What You Know” in the June 2016 ILTA white paper, “Knowledge Management: One Size Does Not Fit All.”
ILTACON TV Highlights – Speaking of Knowledge Management…
Oz Benamram offers extra insight on knowledge management and how it can add value. Meredith Williams describes Baker Donelson’s application of knowledge management and how the technology and information come together for the benefit of the firm’s practice. SOMETHING EXTRA – ILTA Blogs
If you missed it, several ILTA members shared great content last week. Catch up on your reading this weekend with Tom Phelps’ “Training & Development – Flipped Learning: What Have We Learned So Far?” and with Ed Jorczyk and Josh Lazar’s post, “From the Trenches – Upgrading to Windows 10.”
As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics.
