But Wait... There's More

Last week members discussed texting with clients, total technology spend and more. This week’s ILTACON TV highlight features legal security thought leaders. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.

Texting with Clients

Texting feels quick, informal and “safe.” One may forgive a typo in a text but not in an email or infer negative subtext in an email but not in a text. An attorney might text a client for a brief communication or clarification but what must be done and can be done with that information at a later time? Mobile device management policies, implementation plans and tools help. ILTA has guidance on this including “Laying Groundwork for the Technology-Enabled Mobile Lawyer,” the profile on Microsoft Send in “20 Useful Apps from the MS Garage,” “Selecting the Right Applications for Working on the Go” and “Navigating Through the MDM Software Market.” To better understand the potential challenges listen to recordings and read articles on this topic including “Live Demonstration of a Mobile Device Investigation,” “Business and Legal Aspects of Mobile, Social and Emerging Technologies,” “Remote Users: The Walking, Talking Security Risk” and “You Can Discover WHAT on My Device?!”

ILTACON TV Highlights – Security

Mobility and security must go hand-in-hand. Security thought leaders and ILTA volunteers shared their insights on security while at ILTACON 2016. Scott Rolf shares his thoughts on where we are and where we are going. Judi Flournoy discusses her sessions, “Respond Effectively to Your First Security Audit” and “Remote Users” referenced above. David Michel speaks to the challenges and his successes in keeping his firm secure through security awareness and applying the right technology tools. SOMETHING EXTRA – Total Technology Spend and ILTA’s INSIGHT in London

Members recently inquired about the total technology spend at other law firms. Beginning on page 262 of ILTA’s 2015 Technology Survey find the section discussing technology spending. For more statistics gathered this past summer see the 2016 ILTA/InsideLegal Technology Purchasing Survey. Find the dollars spent on technology per attorney on page four. To compare legal with other industries review ZDNet’s analysis of Gartner’s 2016 Worldwide IT Spending Forecast, “IT Budgets 2016: Surveys, Software and Services,” or the International Data Corporation’s forecast, “Worldwide IT Spending Will Reach $2.8 trillion in 2019…”

If you live across the pond from ILTA headquarters or plan to be there on the 17th of November, you will want to attend ILTA’s INSIGHT. The day begins with a keynote from Martin Smith MBE, Chairman and Founder of The Security Company. He will speak on “Legal Business Transformation, Through Info Security?” To learn more about Smith, read his most recent blog post “The Law Still Applies Online.”

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics. If there are specific topics you would like assistance exploring, please contact me at joanne@iltanet.org
