Last week members discussed managing and monitoring a remote workforce, security frameworks and more. This post’s ILTACON TV highlight focuses on the leaders of the Women Who Lead initiatives. Scroll down to “Something Extra.” ILTA has recordings and a takeaway document from INSIGHT available. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.
A Remote Workforce
In July of 2016, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an increase (24 percent) to the percentage of employed people working some or all of the time from home. In 2003, 19 percent reported working some or all of the time at home. When considering management and professionals, the percent increases far more.
Questions about permitting staff to work remotely or have a flexible office schedule percolated a few times in 2016 with ILTA peers. See the case studies in ILTA’s 2015 IT Staffing Survey beginning on page 14 and the question about diversity and staff posed to Berys Amor in her ILTACON TV interview. (Question asked at 8 minutes into the video.) Should the legal industry prepare to offer more remote work options to retain talent? Consider these tips, statistics and concerns. Staffing agency, Kelly Services, wrote "Heads in the Clouds: The Pros and Cons of Remote Workers.” Remote.co wrote “10 Stats About Remote Work.” Business.com offers “11 Tools for Tracking Your Remote Staff’s Productivity.” If you consider this remote work for hourly employees in the United States remember to review overtime regulations. Watch for updates on the Department of Labor’s new overtime rules. Though scheduled to take effect December 1, 2016, an emergency motion for preliminary injunction from the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Texas has delayed the effective date for this overtime rule according to a recent Department of Labor announcement. For more on the future job force, read “A Look at the Future of the U.S. Labor Force to 2060.”
After all this, don’t forget the security considerations. Find guidance from the ILTACON session, “Remote Users: The Walking, Talking Security Risk.”
ILTACON TV Highlights – Women Who Lead
In the ILTACON TV studio at ILTACON 2016, Todd Corham interviewed Michele Gossmeyer and Catherine Monte about leadership, developing tomorrow’s leaders, communication styles and their work on the programming for the Women Who Lead initiatives. Some recent Women Who Lead programming has included the Women in STEM series such as “You Don’t Have to Be Wonder Woman” and “Failure Is an Option: The Growth Mindset”, the ILTACON session, “Help! More Women Needed!,” the Leadership NEW.0 session, “Leading Through Differences: Giving and Receiving Feedback” and “Full Steam Ahead: Master Mid-Career Challenges and Envision "Encore" Careers.” Watch for registration information for the next Women Who Lead webinar in January.
SOMETHING EXTRA – A Security Framework and ILTA’s INSIGHT
A member recently asked for information on security frameworks. ILTA’s volunteers developed and assembled a premier collection of security documentation, best practices, checklists and more. Visit the LegalSEC page for links to helpful documents, LegalSEC Summit Materials, and surveys. For the Risk Assessment Toolkit, the ILTA Peer – Security Best Practices document and more, browse through the LegalSEC Community Library.
In November, ILTA hosted its annual one-day conference in London filled with educational programming on agile workforces, artificial intelligence, security, GDPR and much more. If you couldn’t attend or missed a session listen to the recordings and review a Takeaways document under INSIGHT Downloads.
