2016 Highlights and 2017 Predictions

Are predictions just the hope of where the market will be or truly plausible for 2017 and beyond? I’ll let you decide.

• The MIT Technology Review offers “10 Breakthrough Technologies - 2016” that will excite you for 2017.
• The December issue of Legal IT Insider has plenty of 2016 year in review perspectives in “The Big Feature.”
• Forbes collected predictions in technology and sees AI eclipsing big data in 2017. Specifically, Stuart Frankel of Narrative Science says, “The move towards conversational interfaces (or chatbots) will accelerate.”
• Betanews offers “Five IT Predictions for 2017” without a single mention of AI.
• Gartner, Inc. shares predictions through 2022 developed at the October Gartner Symposium/ITxpo in “Gartner Reveals Top Predictions for IT Organizations and Users in 2017 and Beyond.”
• NetworkWorld’s predictions, “Six Network and Security Trends You Can Expect in 2017,” will have you quickly reviewing your organization’s security system.
• At ILTACON 2016, participants shared their predictions for the Idea Wall Time Capsule for 2020.
• LexisNexis’ Business of Law Blog reported on a 2016 Association of Corporate Counsel study for 2017 predictions in “ACC Study: Law Departments to Display Strategic Business Value in 2017.”
• If you want to compare predictions made in December 2015 with the developments of 2016 re-read “Beautiful Minds: 41 Legal Industry Predictions for 2016.”
• If you are stress eating over some new tech issue in 2017, at least be prepared to eat trendy foods. (Hint: The trend is purple food.)

Do you want to make your own predictions for 2017? At ILTA’s Leadership NEW.0 seminar in November, Matt Homann, CEO and founder of Filament, asked participants to envision the future business environment for the next generation of leaders. He noted “we are terrible at predicting the future… because our minds can imagine a thousand possibilities… but we are really good at remembering what happened.” He led an exercise called “Remember the Future.” He instructed participants to “remember” from 2021 back to today and use the phrase “I remember…” to develop a narrative to generate predictions of the future legal world.
