Serve & Secure: "Archiving Lessons Learned - Hope Eternal"

Over the years in IT, I have been amazed at a reoccurring theme that occurs when dealing with the implementation of products.  I could ramble on and on and on describing my thoughts and experiences but was introduced to a blog post written by Scott Rolf, Director of Technology at Tucker Elllis LLP  (bio available at this link).  Scott describes the issues or as he calls them "Ouch's" that were encountered during his firm's migration of email archiving products and provides a bullet list of all the lessons that were learned from this project.   Scott has graciously permitted me to link to his blog post for all to read.

This blog article http://rolfsa.blogspot.com/2012/03/lessons-learning-in-migrating-email.html by Scott Rolf is a great read and contains some pointers that if remembered will definitely assist everyone on future projects. I recommend you read the entire post but here is a subset of Scott’s  14 lessons learned during his archive migration:

  • Identify all your message classes
  • If at all possible do a test run with a few people.
  • Be wary of the ingestion process
  • Put a rider in on our contact that states if the project takes longer than the time estimated
  • Identify all the people working on your team and where they fit into the org chart of the vendor..
  • Walk through the project with them and get them to present a project plan.
  • Identify your exit plan should the *&^% hit the fan

Hope you enjoy this post as much as I did
