Write Beside Me: The "I's" Have It

By Randi Mayes posted 04-29-2013 15:07

Perhaps the single most egregious grammar error made by folks who should know better is the phrase “between you and I.” It should be “between you and me,” of course. “Me” is an objective pronoun, and it’s the object of the preposition “between.” You’d never write or say “between we;” it's “between us.” Get comfortable with writing/saying “between you and me.”

During the early training to correct this error, I’ve often seen “between you and myself.” Oh, that’s so wrong. That’s just wronger ;-)

And while I have your attention on variations of the personal pronoun “I,” let’s chat about the possessive form “my.” That’s my lunch! Where’s my iPhone? What’s that weird thing in my soup?

No problem until we move to joint ownership or possession. That’s where the weirdness can happen; and I've seen some crazy words like "I's" or "mine's" or "myself's" or "my's" -- YIKES!! Here are some correct examples: Check out Ben’s and my articles in the magazine; John’s and my opinions are similar. The footprints were made by Ann and me; yes, they’re Ann’s and my footprints.

Write on!
