Compliance at Law Firms

Great article in Corporate Counsel yesterday about the demise of Dewey shines a light on an area that is often overlooked: Lack of Formal Compliance. Most of my corporate peers live with compliance on a daily basis and have a fully staffed and managed compliance group. This would include everything from HIPPA compliance, sunshine act, whistleblower hot line, SOPs for reporting and so on. A week or so ago, our corporate risk officer asked me in passing if I knew if any of our law firms had compliance programs. I told him that they might have given a partner an additional title, but I doubt very much that any law firm we work with would have a full time compliance officer with all the authority and reporting of one of our peer companies.

I'd love to hear comments on this from both corporate peers and law firms...
