PURPOSE:
The Membership Task Force will review the business and industry trends impacting the current definition of “member” and “participant” and determine what changes to the membership structure, if any, will be required to align with, and capitalize on, developments in the legal services industry and the evolving needs of current ILTA members and the broader legal community.
ROLE:
Task force members will provide varying points of view and work to reach consensus around whether or not changes are required to the meaning of “member” and “participant,” and promote transparency around the membership process.
TERM:
Six (6) months to one year, beginning in June 2019, and remaining active until In Scope objectives are achieved.
TEAM COMPOSITION:
The team is comprised of the following roles:
- Six (6) to Eight (8) representatives within ILTA member entities (law firms; corporate legal; law schools; and non-US), the Associate Participant category, and business partners;
- Two ILTA Board Liaisons (President and Executive Vice President); and
- ILTA Chief Executive Officer
The team will be supported by a Staff Liaison, the ILTA Membership Engagement Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Deliver (at minimum, two) recommendations to the Board, including pros and cons to items identified as In Scope. Initial presentation to the Board of Directors will be in August 2019.
In Scope
- Define what an “employee” of a member organization means
- Explore expanded hybrid membership models (full membership vs. participant membership, etc.)
- Expand opportunities for business partners in the volunteer structure
- Determine whether different member/participant types have different access to ILTA products, services, and volunteer opportunities (aka stratification of member benefits)
- Identify “new” entity types and their eligibility for ILTA membership (e.g., ALSP, wholly-owned subsidiaries of law firms, publicly-traded law firms)
- Determine whether IT staff or general counsel of business partners with a large legal market presence will be excluded from (or included in) ILTA membership
- Perform research by gathering and analyzing experiences from individuals interacting with ILTA and the legal technology landscape in various ways (i.e. volunteering, partnering, servicing, etc.)

DUTIES:
- Participate in bi-weekly meetings
- Conduct a series of interviews with an identified diverse group of members
- Collaborate with team mates to develop the recommendations identified as “In Scope”

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SERVICE:

- At least two years’ experience working in legal technology
- Willingness to accept direction from the volunteer leadership and ILTA staff as required

COMPENSATION:
ILTA volunteer leaders do not receive compensation for their services but may be reimbursed for expenses.
